A report on the Kanga Cup experience of the Gungahlin Storm 2008 .
The team was made up of boys who were playing at the Kanga Cup for the first time and it was a very young team.  In the first game on Monday in freezing conditions at Kambah they came up against a very experienced Western Panthers team and did very well to play out a 2-2 draw after being behind in the second half.  Later that day in driving rain at Wanniassa the team scored a fantastic 14-0 win over the Woden Valley Panthers.  This scoreline was the highest for any Under 11 Boys team throughout the competition.  On Tuesday despite having the vast majority of the play the team could only beat the Majura Reds by 2-0 at UC.  The big test was on the Wednesday morning against the eventual cup champions South Melbourne.  On a very bumpy Kaleen field the game started well and the team had the very good South Melbourne team frustrated.  Some soft goals including a penalty first goal and some basic errors contributed to a 4-0 defeat.  This meant a nervous wait in the afternoon to see how the Western Panthers would go on goal differences.  As it turned out the Storm managed to hang on to second place in the pool which took them through to the Cup second round.

The Cup second round meant two games on the Thursday.  The best game of the whole Under 11 Boys tournament according to neutral observers was played against Stanmore Hawks at Mawson.  After a see-sawing first half the Storm found itself 4-1 down early in the second half, however they fought back brilliantly to go down 4-3 but doing everything but score another 2 goals.  As they say just another five more minutes!   After such a draining game the team came up against a very experienced and fresh Terrigal United team (who would eventually push South Melbourne to the limit in the semi-final) in wet and slippery conditions at Kambah.  The team finished with a very disappointing performance to go down 9-2 and out of the Cup.

Overall it was a good learning experience for the team especially since they played the 2 best teams in the tournament along the way, and one that will stand them in good stead for future tournaments.

A big thankyou to all our sponsors: Upmarket Constructions (tracksuits), The Marketplace (polos), The Videoman (bags), and, the Mooreish on Moore (drinks).
